The cytoskeleton refers to the structure of the protein fiber network in eukaryotic cells. The objective existence of cytoskeleton was not recognized until the 1960s, when electron microscopy samples were fixed at room temperature using glutaraldehyde. CD BioSciences offers our clients a wide range of cytoskeleton research services, including imaging, compound screening, and mechanistic studies, based on our extensive experience in cell biology.

What is the Cytoskeleton?

The concept of cytoskeleton in a narrow sense refers to the protein-fiber reticulum system (a system of microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate fibers) in eukaryotic cells, which consists of a structural system called the cytoskeletal system, together with the intracellular genetic system, the biofilm system and the "three systems of the cell".

Comparison of Three Cytoskeletons

All three types of cytoskeletons are chemically composed of proteins, structurally all are fibrous can support the shape of the cell, involved in intracellular material transport and information transfer; all can play an important role in cell movement and cell division. However, their physiological functions as well as composition still differ.

Microfilaments Microtubules Intermediate Filaments
