Biomolecular condensates mediated by phase separation are a prevalent phenomenon in biological systems and provide a new framework for understanding cellular organization and synergistic-dependent cellular functions. However, the construction of artificial biomolecular condensates with specific functions remains quite challenging. Recently, with the increasing understanding of the underlying mechanisms of condensates formation and the dependence of cellular functions on the properties of such condensates, scientists can exploit the principles of macromolecular phase separation and condensate biology to develop synthetic functional biomolecular condensates, by which the benefits of phase transition and membrane-less compartments can be exploited for synthetic biology applications. Scientists have successfully utilized the pH-responsive properties of designed peptide molecules to construct biomolecular condensates in living cell lysosomes and applied them to cancer therapy.
