Individual biomolecular condensates have a specific composition, often concentrating ten to hundreds of different proteins and often containing RNA molecules. In addition, studies have shown that other biomolecules such as amino acids, sugars, metabolic intermediates, and enzymatic cofactors may be present in the condensate. The structure and function of biomolecular condensates are directly related to the composition of the condensate community. Mislocalized proteins far from their physiological condensates communities or in unnatural condensates can drive pathological disease mechanisms. Changes in condensates composition can affect many characteristics, from material properties (e.g. viscosity and surface tension) to kinetics and the ability to respond to environmental stimuli (e.g. persistence and aging) to individual components of enzymatic activity.
