Analysis of Biomolecular Condensates in Plants

Unlike animals, plants have the unique ability to sustain growth and development. Inherent in nature, plants are also exposed to different environmental conditions, such as light, temperature, and pathogens, that can reshape their developmental activities. Depending on the developmental stage or environmental conditions, plants alter global gene expression through coordinated signals between membrane-bound chloroplasts and mitochondria, and the nucleus. In addition, various membrane-free compartments have been identified within plant cells involved in plant development and responses to different environmental conditions. The vast majority of studies examining the function of various biomolecular condensates and the underlying physical principles that control their formation have been performed in fungal or animal systems. Studies examining phase separation in these systems have led to many breakthroughs in understanding fundamental cellular processes and the underlying mechanisms that drive disease. In contrast, relatively few studies have examined the phase separation of biomolecular condensates in plant systems.
