Target Information
Alternative Names
EC 2.7.1.6; epididymis secretory protein Li 19; Galactokinase; Galactokinase 1; Galactose kinase; GALK; GALK 1; GALK1; GALK1_HUMAN; GK1; GLK; GLK1; HEL-S-19
Protein Function
Catalyzes the transfer of a phosphate from ATP to alpha-D-galactose and participates in the first committed step in the catabolism of galactose.
Involvement in Disease
Defects in GALK1 are the cause of galactosemia II (GALCT2). Galactosemia II is an autosomal recessive deficiency characterized by congenital cataracts during infancy and presenile cataracts in the adult population. The cataracts are secondary to accumulation of galactitol in the lenses.
